Append: This MB is a MSI P6n SLI Platinum with a dual-core Intel CPU.
It's been weird setting this one up. It has issues, like the
multichannel sound output's humming like a nuclear reactor. It refuses
to recognize the EDID from one of two identical monitors. Yeah, fun...

Just for ducks I figured I'd try using hdparm

ric at ima:~$ sudo hdparm -d1 /dev/sr0

/dev/sr0:
  setting using_dma to 1 (on)
HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
HDIO_GET_DMA failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
ric at ima:~$

Weird stuff going on, a smidge past my pay-grade. This is a relatively
new DVD R/W which worked fine before. Google and I are becoming at odds
here. I'm not sure what to trust. Thanks, Ric
