uname would probably give you what you need.

 $ uname -o
GNU/Linux

On my Macbook, I get something like 'Darwin'. YMMV.

$ uname -o |grep Linux>/dev/null && is_linux=true || is_linux=false
$ echo $is_linux
true

Hi All,

I have Micromax data card (MMX 352G 3G). I have tried installing it on
Ubuntu for whole one day and couldn't able to do it. I have also read
lot of articles but that too couldn't help me out. I am really in need
to have internet connection on Ubuntu.

Please guide me. I would really appreciate you guys.

Thanks a lot.

The most amazing part of this type of incident is that the hangings
are found only in the guest which uses .rpm package managers, but the
guests which uses .deb packaging systems are not getting hanged in the
Virtual Box OSE in Ubuntu LTS 10.04. This I saw just from the
practical visualization. Out of 2 GB RAM, I have allocated to each
guest around 720 MB (yes, only one guest I use at a time and at that
time host is no more used, so there should not be any RAM issue).
However, out of 250 HDD, each guest has memory flexible upto a maximum
of 20 GB. While only openSUSE showed the hangings but not Kubuntu and
PCLinuxOS. Well, I still see what's the other differences are....

Hi,
try this:
sudo apt-get install usb-modeswitch

These sticks come with a ZeroCD setup. When you first plug it it, you only
see it as a pendrive for windows drivers. But the kernel already has the
drivers, but not the information, that it needs a switch. This package
solves the problem.

Cheers,
Tom

If you like the old gnome 2 interface, xfce is a good, almost great,
alternative.

Hello, you can change *Unity* to *Ubuntu classic* in the login screen. If
interested in another desktop environment, try kde or xfce.
                   -good luck, Subhajit

No you can't, not on 11.10, unless Gnome 3 has been specifically installed
by the user.

On 11.04, yes, but that is now superseded.
