how to 'decrypt' "od -tx1 /dev/input/event4"

i understand that this is the raw output for the devices in linux and the
output looks like hex??? i really have no idea but i wanted to know if
there was anyway to see what was going on (this the raw output from the
keyboard) and from what i have read it gives output for the depression of
the key, the key and when you let off the key,

little as possible)

I am NOT doing this for keylogging purposes, i have asked questions like
this on forums and usually get responses that i don't need to know how to
do this except for keyloggers
