yes I tried that. Did not work. No response.
In fact no response even to Ctrl-Alt_Del

Man page for runlevel in section 7 says:
Eight runlevels are permitted, the first seven are numbered 0-6
and the
eighth is named S or s (both are permitted).
So, runlevel 1 should be perfectly legit and it should (or must) work,
else it should be taken out of the man page :)
