Sorry to reply to myself, but I think I found the answer in comments
in my menu.lst. It is the ESC key. It's supposed to tell you that
during boot, but everything happens too fast. Better, I can comment
out "hiddenmenu" in menu.lst, and then I should get the menu without
having to worry about when to hit ESC. And I need to increase the
timeout. It does sound a lot like LILO.
