11.04 on a ten year old Dell laptop?

Regarding digest 107, message 9.

I booted my machine with the Shift Key held down.

My choices for kernel were> 2.6.38-11, 2.6.38-8, and 2.6.35-30

Tried all three of these; with (only) 2.6.35-30, ubuntu came up
'fine.'  The only glitch here is that the update manager tells me
that it cannot run.

This is better thus far, perhaps still needs a bit of work?
