I disagree with this. Linux, and Ubuntu in our case, is suitable for
all hardware.

Linux is conceived as a UNIX implementation running on common
hardware, and not only to expensive hardware, as has been the case of
typical closed source UNIXes.

If it runs OK, I see no reason why he would change to Xubuntu or
Lubuntu, other than personal taste. GNOME Classic menu (of both GNOME
2.32.x and 3.x), is light, and the same applies for Unity 2D.
