Need some help on settings for a microphone...

*I am trying to setup my headset, and used to use alsamixer to make sure 
my settings were correct, but now for some unknown reason alsamixer does 
not bring up the gui...From a terminal typing alsamixer it tells me load 
mixer controls: Invalid argument...???

Has alsamixer changed in anyway...???

Thanks for any help on this, or maybe there is another program one can 
use to make sure the mic settings are correct..
