Using "confity" you can, I believe, set the Launcher /not/ to
auto-hide. Would that help?
AFAIK, no, you can't move it from the left edge. That keeps it in
cheap horizontal pixels, not expensive vertical ones, and it puts it
as far as possible away from the scrollbars. That's why it's there, I
reckon.
