11.10 post upgrade problem with Unity

I think it is a 3D problem - it isn't loading the dash or top menu
bar.  If I select unity 2D, then it works.  This computer worked with
11.04 unity 3d.  It has an nvidia card.  It also worked on this
computer with 11.10 until I went into cssm.

Is there a utility to check whether my card is supported for 3D?  I
did a fresh install but kept my home dir so something could be there
causing a conflict.
