In the USA, at least, this is not costly at all. You can get external
SATA-II drives from Fantom, Quadra, and such with both USB and eSATA
interfaces (Quadra also has firewire) for under US$100 at 1TB, maybe even
2TB. USB and eSATA are inherently hot-pluggable. I have 4 of these, plus
the somewhat riskier drive docks (I use Kingwin EZ-dock, but don't have
found the quality lacking) for "internal" drives, also with a choice of USB
2.0 or eSATA-II. This all works as conveniently as thumb drives. Truly
marvellous for backup archives -- they can be taken off-line and off-site as
needed without shutting down the system.
