Build my own for a $1000

Greetings,

New to Ubuntu - and the list - but well seasoned in UNIX ( OS, not
hardware ) and a long-time supporter of Linux. I'm planning to build
my first computer and have about $1,000 to spend; it will be running
Ubuntu Linux 10.04. The computers main function will be an
application server for GIS data; it may also be required to host web
pages and act as a desktop machine. I currently have a HP Photosmart
C309 printer which I would like to use with my new box. Here are some
specific questions I need help answering:

1. Should I go with a VGA or DVI monitor?
2. How much memory?
3. Are there specific network interfaces I might need?
4. I would like to have 4 internal and 2 external ( hotplug
supportable ) HDDs with each disk capable of storing approximately
500GB; is there a specific drive type and/or manufacturer I should be
looking at?
5. I will need 64bit support; should I use an Intel or AMD processor?

My priorities for the parts to be purchased are quality and
reliability over speed and price. I would also appreciate feedback on
where other Ubuntu builders purchase their parts.

Thanks in advance for reading,

Mike
