No KMS -> no loaded driver -> no screens
That's what it appears to me to be happening. Unfortunately, I don't run
ATI graphics nor 11.10, so I can't test this diagnosis. For a solution,
I would suggest either removing "nomodeset" as a kernel parameter, or
install the ATI Catalyst 3D accelerated driver (fglxr) from the repo.
