I should confess, I've not fallen in love with Unity yet. However I like
GNOME Shell even less. This is largely due to the idea of unified
interface for both smart-phone and desktop PC being a little out of my
comprehension. Am I getting old and stubborn? I do not know...
Current shortcomings of GNOME 3 affect my relationship with both too.
However things change and, quite often, it takes to us poor human beings
a bit of time to digest changes. Only time would clear it up.
Right now Ubuntu is the only distro allowing me to install both Unity and
GNOME 3 Shell on the same system. This way I can login into any of them
at any time. Thus I can keep my eye on what is going on without
sacrificing much of my productivity. Interestingly enough it seems that
slowly I'm getting used to both of them.
Yes, Unity is slightly less stable today that is desired. But so is GNOME
3 Shell, and so is GNOME 3 itself. Well, they are just babies yet.
Speaking of Unity, Oneiric was quite a step forward though. Even on my
laptop with blacklisted Nvidia GForce 7300 it runs just fine and is
pretty snappy. And I mean 3D Unity, not 2D. Though I should admit it is a
little more demanding on resources then GNOME 3 Shell.
Coming back to the subject, IMHO this is a case when "rumors of its death
are slightly exaggerated."
