Glad you found something that is useful for you.
As for Mint going the way of Ubuntu, it certainly isn't now
and I honestly don't think it ever will. I'm using the Gnome 3
shell with the MGSE (Mint Gnome Shell Extensions). I've been
using Mint 12 RC for several weeks now with a Gnome 2 looking
interface that is completely functional and enables me to
continue being very productive with my PC. My setup has
absolutely nothing to do with Mate at all (I'm not using Mate
on Mint, although that is an option at this point if you so
desire).
Just to clarify this:

I thought about using xubuntu as well until I read about Mint
12 and actually tried it. IMHO Mint 12 is a good balance
between the past (gnome 2 classic look and feel within gnome
3, productivity intact) and the future.
Here's another link with the added shell extensions that I use
along with a picture of the desktop:

Anyway, Linux is about choice, not being dictated to... your
choice is Xubuntu, mine is Mint 12 with Gnome 3 & MGSE.
Apparently others here prefer the tablet/handheld style
interface of Unity. I tried to use and like Unity, I really
did. Each to his own.
