Oh, you mean it is *deleted*? The same as if you had released the
mouse button then immediately clicked Ctrl-X
What happens if you just click somewhere then use Shift+cursor key
arrows to extend the highlight?

But cannot you just highlight it and let go the mouse button as you
said above, then it is deleted?
Check the Universal Access settings (at least that is what it is
called in 11.10, I forget which version you are running). System
Settings > Universal Access > Pointing and Clicking and make sure
everything is turned off. I don't quite see how it would give the
effect you are seeing but you never know.
Also what happens if you logon as a different user, is it ok then?
