Right-click the network indicator applet, choose "Edit Connections" -
locate your connection (whatever it is), edit the settings there.
As you have a mixed environment (MS Windows and whatever), yes, you're
going to notice a bit of a lag on the other machines; linux, whatever
version, whatever distro, directly connects and does not, by default,
really bother with any type of "background load balancing" as does MS
Windows and MacOS - it's straight forward.
The environment I have here, all linux machines, works like a charm,
however, when a huge download is in progress, everything slows down -
that's going to happen regardless. Some OS's "hide" that fact, linux
does not.
