I think it's just an automatic reaction. One of the main "fixes" for a
Windows problem is Fdisk > Format > Reinstall. Anytime a machine comes
in for repair they automatically do it.
If you totally bork a Linux install the foregoing steps work quite well
there also. I did that several times when I first started playing with
Linux. Great way to learn what not to do.
