Perception of diesel as a dirty, polluting, inefficient fuel in the usa
is totally opposite to reality. In the bigger picture, diesel beats the
prius in all these measurements (matrices? nah).
As for performance, the diesels beat the petrols at Le Mans for the last
3 or 4 years. Advances in petrol engines had come from diesel
technologies (direct fuel injection, high compression, etc) and
common-rail-technology has provided unsurpassed torgue at all engine
speed range.
Euro-class diesels are clean and efficient and GTL (gas to liquid)
diesels give zero emission (no need for parts per million
classification). With GTL diesels, derived from abundant (and cheap)
natural gas, one wonders about worries about peak oil. One also wonders
about media portrayal in the usa about diesel (and many other things).
