That error message isn't causing your problem - see:

Even on an PPA installed 4.0.1 it shows:
Could not read chrome manifest file
'/usr/lib/firefox-4.0.1/extensions/{972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd}/chrome.manifest'.
