This was my first thought too.  I've replaced DVD writers in both Linux 
and Windoze machines--they often start getting flaky and then stop 
writing altogether.  (They frequently continue to read disks OK).  So I 
just make sure I have an extra drive.  They're $20 and easy to replace.
