installing eclipse 3.6 on ubuntu 10.10?

i've already tried that -- nothing. literally. i type "eclipse" in
a terminal window, the eclipse helios splashscreen comes up, stays
there for a few seconds, then disappears, and the terminal window
simply gives me the prompt back.
i'm about to try "strace eclipse" to see what it complains about,
i'll report back shortly unless, as i mentioned before, someone can
confirm that this just isn't meant to work.
