just an update to what i've tried so far. i've tried each of these in
succession and left the system running, but each time the system still
freezes after 3-5 days.

1. memtest, 1+ passes. no errors
2. zoneminder, stopped service
3. power supply, tests good.
4. moved computer to different building (different electricity)
5. re-greased CPU heatsink
6. front and back case fans running fine, have them set to medium speed
(antec)
7. removed graphics card completely

the only other peripheral i can remove is the optical drive.

i could try swapping the RAM... it's DDR3 and i understand ubuntu
doesn't support that speed yet, could that be the culprit??
