Best Alternative Operating System To Ubuntu?

Aha, yes! 11.04, and I didn't spot that in the reply I just sent
either :(

Yeah, I know it's not a lot of time at all, and I don't expect a whole
new UI to be built in that fortnight. 
But were the plan to be for Unity to be "kept in line with the current
release of gnome, whatever that happens to be", it seems daft to plan
release it two weeks after Gnome changes completely. It's not like we
didn't know it was coming.

I'd inferred from various mumblings that Unity was, essentially, taking
the Gnome 2 libs its based on and running with them, not intending to
have switched to the Gnome 3 libs by Oneiric.
