Best Alternative Operating System To Ubuntu?

What others are supported and work well?  I used to use XFCE in
Xubuntu, but I had to abandon it (to GNOME) a few years ago because a
lot of apps were no longer working well in it.

ISTR that XFCE had really good focus-stealing prevention, which I
still miss in GNOME.
