Well, I apologize then for that. Yeah the wide monitor size they do is a
bit annoying since they give sometimes hardly give you enough height at
times. ...But for your problem with the unity launcher not hiding this
should fix your problem.

gconftool-2 -st int /desktop/unity-2d/launcher/use_strut 0
gconftool-2 -st int /desktop/unity-2d/launcher/hide_mode 1
