Send this 2nd message because it may be more serious than just the 1st 
message, and most of us here just don't jump several versions to 
upgrade. There're lots of major changes between 8.04 and 11.04 since, 
the grub that boots for example and many others.

It may just be necessary for you to install a fresh version. Of course, 
since you know how to compile git (I don't), you know how to save your data.

But still, I think it is worthwhile to try out the 1st message first, 
it's simple to do.
