OK, I may try VB. Is it complicated? I used qemu years ago. Yes, our main system is Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64bit Desktop edition.

I think 750MB should be fine. I suppose there isn't much RAM needed by
the host system while your students are using sage in the virtual
machine. Therefore, if the main system is Ubuntu, 256MB or maybe even
less for the host would be enough and the rest is available for
virtualbox and the guest system. I would just try it on one of the
student machines and if it is working satisfactorily, you can copy it to
the other machines.
