connecting to a server

Well I don't know what was going wrong but I finally was able to get a 
connection.  Since the laptop had a VERY new Ubuntu install (late last 
night) it was wasn't too hard to do another reinstall.  That fixed the 
issue, somehow the install of last night was bad.

I did notice something strange.  As a test, I ran ping using the 
terminal window without and problems.  I got a return ping from every 
computer on my network.   Now comes the strange part... When I try using 
system/administration/network_tools on my desktop ping doesn't work. 
It's not a big issue, I'll just not trust the reports I get from network 
tools.  Has anybody else noticed this?
