I've got one of these in my old Toshiba laptop. Mine doesn't work
either. lspci produces
Toshiba America Info Systems SD TypA Controller (rev 03)
for which so far as I can tell there is no Linux driver.

I just use my cards with a cheap USB reader which works fine.
