I do not own any Macintel hardware  - all my (many) Macs are 680x0 or
PowerPC - and so I have never tried this. (Although my Mac mini G4
triple-boots 10.4, 10.5 and MorphOS, with Ubuntu 10.04 on a LiveCD.)

I would suggest you download and install VirtualBox first and use it
to get familiar with installing Ubuntu before you begin trying to do
it on the "bare metal".

Also, I've had no problems at all running 64-bit, so I'd say go with
that, but I've not tried on an OS X box. This /may/ be different.
