how to take snapshots in special cases

In GNOME on 10.10 there is "Applications->Accessories->Take Screenshot"
which can take a shot of the whole desktop, a particular window, or an
arbitrary rectangle that you mark with the mouse, all with a
configurable delay to give you time to set things up, select the desired
area etc. About the only thing it doesn't seem able to do is take a shot
of itself; I just tried (but not very hard :-)
