after the wired network connection in my hotel room had *seemed* to
be working for a short while, now i'm getting nothing, and all DHCP
client attempts to connect generate this in /var/log/syslog:

very much like this report involving wlan0:

http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1863011.html

the tech support guy for the hotel network was amazingly versed in
ubuntu, and first asked me to try mii-tool, followed by ethtool, but
no luck. so i'm open to suggestions.

wireless is available but slow as heck, so i'd really like to figure
out what the deal is with eth0.

ubuntu 11.10, with the latest upgrades.
