If you hate the user interface for Unity there are other options.
Firstly I'd make sure you're using Unity 2D as opposed to 3D. This is
much more suited to lower specification hardware. You could also try a
livecd of Lubuntu, Xubuntu or Kubuntu and see if any of those perform
better or are suited to your needs better. The best thing about Linux
and Ubuntu is the choice.
