Trying to Load Ubuntu 11.04 onto HP Laptop. Failed at reboot

Thanks for your help

Just a question: On the last setup I set the swap area to a primary
partition and it came up as being sda2. Is this the normal location or
should we use sda5 which I think is the first extended partition?

Peter, sorry to say that I too have no better idea to proceed after 
you've done all this other that there could be a hardware issue on RAM 
or hard disk and in which case, I am not certain myself.

Hopefully, Tom H and others can suggest other possibilities.
Wish you luck and if you've found a way out, will appreciate you post 
back here.
