So far, the Unity question has been solved for me by Ubuntu: Natty's latest
betta refuses to start Unity because I don't have hardware that supports it -
which in turn is because Natty has no working proprietary Nvidia driver (170
fails to create the required module, "current" completely stops the system
from booting, and Nvidia's own driver can't install because it says the
kernel was compiled with gcc 4.4 and gcc 4.5 is installed...).

So I can confirm that Gnome 2 is there, because it's what Natty starts when it
can't start Unity. So far I can't say much to unity, but Natty is crappy at
the moment, at least if you still use a Geforce 7300GS....
