I use bcrypt. It's a command line encryption tool.  You simply have to
type: bcrypt  $FILE and enter the pass-phrase.  Works the same way with
direcotries.

I tried it but it looks like it's meant to work with directories not
individual files.

Surely this can't be difficult?
