Open up another terminal and run 'top'; check to see if you are getting
high cpu usage. Do you by chance have an nVidia card? If so, these might
be worth a read:
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-180/+bug/617994>
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers/+bug/629910>
Seems there are some font rendering issues.
You can also try GtkPerf (sudo apt-get install gtkperf) to test:
http://gtkperf.sourceforge.net/
http://packages.ubuntu.com/en/maverick/gtkperf
Even in lucid, on this system:
Without LCD subpixel rendering:
Total time: 17.20
With LCD subpixel rendering turned on:
Total time: 25.57
In any event, it may be a combination of things; cpu usage, graphics
rendering, USB subsystem if a USB keyboard, etc., etc. Your best bet is
to check launchpad to see if you can find a similar issue - or file a
bug report so the problem can be fixed before release:
