Good thing Office Mac 2011 is being released next month.
Office 2010 was just released in June. It always seems most businesses
are slow to jump on the upgrade bandwagon if they don't have to, and I
doubt schools are in a huge rush either. I would be shocked if people
were running into the same issues as when half the world upgraded from
2003 and the rest didn't.
With any luck compatibility with OOXML is a little better than it has
been in the past, and people can more easily share with OpenOffice, but
I wouldn't bet my hat on it.
