Evolution very slow to start - what to check/try?

When I start Evolution (I'm only using the address book part so I don't
always have it running) it takes a very long time to start up. I just
timed it and it was 30 seconds from clicking on the menu entry to the
appearance of Evolution on my desktop.
This is on a system with a quad core processor, fast hard disks and 8Gb
of memory so I don't think it's a system speed problem.
I just tried running evolution from the command line and it starts
almost immediately. It's not because this is a subsequent start of
evolution, closing the command line run and then starting from the menu
again takes 30 seconds still!
Can anyone suggest what's causing this slow start up problem?
