Transfer video from JVC gr-d740e to computer

I have a JVC camcorder with digital tape and a firewire connection  
between the camera and the Ubuntu 10.04 computer and want to transfer  
the video on the tape in the camera to the computer.

Is this possible at al and if so, how do you do it?

There didn't appear to be any mount of the firewire connection, even  
after setting the camera to play. Hopefully someone have tried this  
thing before, because I am totally blank in this field  :-(
