Sound and video seem to be the Achilles Heel of *buntu from the many 
posts concerning these 2 subjects. But, I have to hasten to add, is that 
this is not really restricted to *buntu.

and see if this helps to solve your problem(s).

People will disagree with me, but what I do is to simply uninstall 
pulseaudio and at the same time install alsamixergui; then start 
alsamixergui (using ALT-F2) and make sure that all the correct channels 
have been activated. For example, with me, and I use the SoundBlaster 
Audigy card, I have to activate the Analog Output Jack.

Some others say that if you are using pulseaudio to use pavucontrol and 
make sure that you have the correct inputs/outputs selected.

Personally, I just get rid of pulseaudio and get on with it.....
