Oh, I think that you like to create all these "hurdles" for yourself
just to keep us entertained :-) .
All this should be available to you in either
System>Preferences>Screensaver and/or in the
System>Administration>nVidia X Server Settings :-) .
Aaaah...but then you ARE running an Ubuntu system contaminated with KDE,
aren't you? :-D

PS I still think that the CRT monitor is on the way out. Some component
cannot handle the strain and is displaying that strain by doing what you
are seeing. Had a similar problem with one of my CRTs when I was using them.
