Illegal instruction while upgrading to Maverick

I've got an AMD K6-2/450 system I'm upgrading from Lucid to Maverick.
About the first thing I get after the downloads complete is a removal
script for libc6 dying on an illegal instruction signal:

Unpacking replacement libc6 ...
dpkg: warning: old post-removal script killed by signal (Illegal
instruction)
dpkg - trying script from the new package instead ...
dpkg: error processing
/var/cache/apt/archives/libc6_2.12.1-0ubuntu6_i386.deb (--unpack):
subprocess new post-removal script killed by signal (Illegal instruction)
dpkg: error while cleaning up:
subprocess installed pre-installation script killed by signal (Illegal
instruction)
Errors were encountered while processing:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/libc6_2.12.1-0ubuntu6_i386.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

The upgrade will not progress beyond this. Any idea how I can handle
this other than doing a wipe and new install?

Ben
