It probably does mean that you are not using a binary driver. This might 
be a case for a bug report. I wonder if /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old holds 
anything....could you post the contents on pastebin.ubuntu.com?

Then you can try using AMD's binary driver to see if things improve.
