Apart from the fact that they only belong there in Windows, I'm always
surprised so many people complain about those "control gadgets". they are so
easy to change!
You can do it from the command line:
gconftool-2 --set /apps/metacity/general/button_layout --type string
menu:minimize,maximize,close (although I personaly use
close:minimize,maximize)
You can do it from gconf-editor (apps->metacity-general->button_layout
You can easily write a GUI tool to do it (which raises the question why there
is no such tool in Gnome).
I did this today as an exercise with RealBasic, if you wish you can look at
the quick and dirty result on www.spheniscus.ch
My opinion is that people who don't even want to learn how to do that should
better stay with Windows (where they can't change where the control gadgets
are, anyway).
