Apart from the fact that they only belong there in Windows, I'm always 
surprised so many people complain about those "control gadgets". they are so 
easy to change!

You can do it from the command line:
gconftool-2 --set /apps/metacity/general/button_layout --type string 
menu:minimize,maximize,close (although I personaly use 
close:minimize,maximize)

You can do it from gconf-editor (apps->metacity-general->button_layout

You can easily write a GUI tool to do it (which raises  the question why there 
is no such tool in Gnome).

I did this today as an exercise with RealBasic, if you wish you can look at 
the quick and dirty result on www.spheniscus.ch

My opinion is that people who don't even want to learn how to do that should 
better stay with Windows (where they can't change where the control gadgets 
are, anyway).
