First, I totally agree with your complaints about grub 2 - it requires
a level of attention I don't need to invest in something that changes
once in a blue moon, if that often.  What a convoluted piece of yuck.

I did this, too, recently, but I can't quite remember all the steps it
took to make this work.  Part of it was catching grub on the way up
and pointing it at the newer / on the kernel line, I think part of it
was to grub-install /dev/sda, and part of it was fixing the boot order
of my drives in the PROM.  There was an update-grub in there, too, but
I think that was to fix which root to use, not the boot disk - that
was probably the grub-install.

The puzzling part here though is that you moved your partitions on the
same disk, which means that the UUID shouldn't have changed.

As for fstab, I use LABELs, not UUIDs.  That way I can move things
around under the table and the kernel doesn't care as long as the
labels are set right.
