Disk defragmenting (was "Re: No Sound :(")

Actually, for Windows I find MyDefrag to be better. Its a tiny
defragmentor that takes command line switches to set options, supports
scripting, or can be launched from the GUI that comes with it. The
defrag program itself is tiny, only a few k in size, and displays a
representation of the sectors on your drive color coded for what they
are or what degree of fragmentation they have. Its small but
powerful. This tool can reorganize the drive, moving the folders for
Windows and frequently used apps to the front of the drive as it
defrags. This takes a very long time, but the boost in drive
performance is very noticeable when its done.
MyDefrag used to be called JKDefrag, its free, and its open source
under the GNU license.
Technically, all file systems can become fragmented. Linux EXT3 and 4
are no different. Even the Mac HFS file system can become fragmented
over time. However, the degree of how quickly fragmentation occurs
and how severe varies greatly, and how much that fragmentation impacts
the performance of the drive is different for each file system. EXT3
and 4 like HFS aren't as effected by file fragmentation as NTFS is.
You can find Linux and Mac defrag programs but they're not common
because its not really as great an issue as it is on Windows. Even a
small amount of file fragmentation on a NTFS volume can impact drive
performance in certain situations.
