K3b issue

As I've said here many times, I converted over from CentOS 5.5 w/GNOME
2.16 to Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick) w/GNOME 2.32 a few weeks ago, and I
just ran into an issue that I'm having trouble wrapping my head around
(yes, another one :-).
I used k3b on CentOS because it's just a really nice front end for
most CD/DVD creation things I need to do. I created a whole slew of
discs with different collections of files on them, and I religiously
save most of the lists in .k3b index files so I could recreate or
modify them on demand in the future.
Little did I know....
Under Maverick, k3b cannot read the old .k3b files I saved from
before. There also does not appear to be any conversion path to make
those older files useful to me at all.
This baffles me - it's not like there's any particular difficulty in
implementation, and backwards compatibility is usually a really good
reason to do such things (I would go so far as to call it a compelling
reason), but apparently not here.
This isn't like documentation that hasn't been properly updated for
the latest whizz-bang newfangled twist of that terrific xxx driver
that changed slightly from 2.6.34 to 2.6.35, or a whole new
application with no history.
Huh? (Word fail me - even WTF doesn't really cover this one....)
