On a job in California I used a USB wireless modem with my laptop that
had 10.04 on it. I was expecting a bit of a hassle but it was purely
plug-and-play; Network Manager showed me Verizon's network, I clicked
on it to connect. Done.
The USB device provided to me was Verizon's UM175, I don't know who
manufactures it or if it's the same as the ones previously mentioned.

connection, though the setup for that will most likely be a bit more
involved than the above. Certainly doable though.
